Yoichi opened in Hokkaïdo in 1934, in the same year as establishing the Nikka Whisky company. Masataka Taketsuru, the founder, considered it was the perfect place to build its first distillery, combining similar conditions as Scotland where it learned everything about whisky.
In 2002 and 2008, Yoichi has been crowned “Best Single Malt in the World” at the World Whiskies Awards. Such recognition was a shock for the Scottish distillers, and a revelation for many whisky fans.
